LYON, France (AP) — Sam Cane has reassumed the captaincy of a much-changed New Zealand side tasked with clinching a quarterfinal spot at the Rugby World Cup against Uruguay on Thursday. The bonus-point win from their first meeting with Los Teros should not be too much trouble for an All Blacks side with nine changes. After demolishing Italy 96-17 last Friday, the All Blacks chose on Tuesday to give fringe players game time and rest front-liners in preparation for an expected quarterfinal next week.Cane makes his first start in the pool stage after a back twinge. He proved his fitness off the bench in the last quarter against Italy. BETTER WEATHER FOR SOFLA

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:15:11 GMT

Happy Tuesday, South Florida!Hopefully everyone had a good start to the week. A weak front pushed through South Florida on Monday and brought more showers and thunderstorms with it. After almost over a week of tracking this slow-moving front drifting south across Florida, we can say that the front has finally moved on. I’m sure many noticed a slight difference in the weather late Monday afternoon as the skies finally cleared and the wind began to pick up. And even though South Florida woke up to a few showers this morning (especially offshore), it sure did feel slightly less humid. More importantly, the long anticipated drier air has finally moved in!Overall, today South Florida can expect an improvement weather-wise compared to what we have seen in the past week. Partly sunny skies will give way to moments of sunshine and some dry time throughout the day. However, it won’t be completely dry as a brisk Northeast breeze could still tap in to some moisture and drag in a shower from t...

Spain’s king asks Pedro Sánchez to form government

Spanish King Felipe VI on Tuesday ordered caretaker Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to attempt to form a government.Sánchez’s Socialist Party came second in July’s inconclusive national election, in which the center-right Popular Party won the most votes. Conservative leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo attempted to form a government but last week failed to obtain the majority support of the Spanish parliament needed to become prime minister.Socialist leader Sánchez, who has governed Spain since he led a successful no-confidence vote against conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in 2018, does not control enough seats in the parliament to govern on his own and will need to obtain the support of a slew of far-left and separatist parties in order to remain in power.Sánchez is widely expected to attempt to form a minority government with Yolanda Díaz’s far-left Sumar coalition, a successor of the Podemos party with which the Socialists governed during the previous legisl...

MANCHESTER, England — Watch out Tory leadership hopefuls, there’s another culture warrior in town.Gracing the main stage at the Conservative Party conference on Tuesday, the U.K.’s Science and Tech Secretary Michelle Donelan vowed to crackdown on the “creeping wokeism” she said is threatening scientific research.“We are the party of facts, we are the party of evidence, we are the party of scientific rigor, and I will stand up for these core values. But increasingly, thanks to the slow creep of wokeism, this guiding light that Thatcher referred to is under attack,” said Donelan, referring to a speech by former Prime Minister and Tory icon Margaret Thatcher to the United Nations in 1989, where she said scientific research must be used to “cast a light ahead, so that we can move step by step in the right direction.”Donelan said she would be launching a review of the use of gender and sex questions in scientific research and statistics, and would produce guidance within six months.“Keir...
