JERUSALEM (AP) — Qatar on Wednesday announced a truce-for-hostages deal between Israel and Hamas that would bring the first temporary halt in fighting in a devastating six-week war, win freedom for dozens of hostages held in the Gaza Strip, and also lead to the release of Palestinian prisoners.Qatar's Foreign Ministry said it would announce within a day when the clock will start ticking on a four-day truce, during which 50 hostages will be released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. Those freed by both sides will be women and children. Humanitarian aid to besieged Gaza would also increase. The announcement came hours after Israel's Cabinet approved the deal. It capped weeks of indirect Qatari-led negotiations between Israel and Hamas, an Islamic militant group that has ruled Gaza for 16 years. The United States and Egypt were also involved in stop-and-go talks to free hostages.Hamas said the deal includes the release of 50 hostages and 150 Palestinian prisoners, a...

The future for Europe and the role of medical innovation

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 12:07:08 GMT

Imagine a future where our children and grandchildren in Europe do not fear diabetes, cancer or Alzheimer’s disease. Where these diseases can be treated in a way that means people living with them experience life like others — or where the diseases are prevented in the first place. This might seem like a dreamer’s world. But when you think of the achievements in medicine that we take for granted on a daily basis — vaccinations that prevent deadly childhood illnesses, and medicines that reduce the risk of a heart attack for millions of people — perhaps the dream isn’t so far off.The company I lead, Novo Nordisk, founded 100 years ago, was the manufacturer of the first generation of insulin in Europe, giving people who were uncertain whether they might live beyond the next few months hope about their futures. But the innovation did not stop there. Innovation through generations means that today, people living with type 1 diabetes don’t need to limit their dreams. We are proud to be spo...

DENVER (AP) — Four men were found dead Tuesday inside a home just north of Denver, authorities said. Deputies responded to a call about a gunshot victim at a home in the afternoon and found the four men dead inside, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office said via the social media platform X. The agency said it appeared to be an “isolated incident” and there was no ongoing threat to the public. The house was locked so deputies forced their way inside and found one man dead from a gunshot wound, Sgt. Adam Sherman told the Denver Post. Deputies found the other three deceased men while checking the rest of the house, Sherman said. Initial indicators show three of the four men were family members, Sherman said. The person who called 911 was a family member of one of the victims, he said. The discovery was made a day after three people were fatally shot in a rural area southwest of Denver, allegedly over a property dispute between neighbors. A suspect in that case was arrested near Albuquerque...
